Each season, new identification photos are added to our catalog. By comparing new photos to our existing set of photos, we can look for “matches”. These matches or “re-sights” allow us to piece together information about an individual whale and can provide important information on its movements, life history and population size throughout the years.

Furthermore, by collaborating with other researchers in the North Atlantic, a larger, oceanic scale database can unravel long-distance movements, migratory flexibility, breeding and feeding areas and a greater knowledge of whale species whose lives are still poorly understood and need our protection!
